Distributed Data Management in Workkow Environments
نویسندگان
چکیده
Most existing workkow management systems (WFMSs) are based on a client/server architecture. This architecture simpliies the overall design but it does not match the distributed nature of workkow applications and it imposes severe limitations in terms of scalability and reliability. Moreover, workkow engines are not very sophisticated in terms of data management, forgetting the fact that workkow is, to a great extent, data ow. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture to address the issue of data management in a WFMS. This architecture is based on a fully distributed workkow engine for control ow, plus a set of loosely synchronized replicated databases for data ow. The resulting system ooers greater robustness and reliability as well as much better data handling capabilities than existing approaches. To better illustrate this novel architecture and its implications, two commercial systems are employed in this paper: FlowMark, as the workkow engine, and the replication capabilities of Lotus Notes, as the support system for distributed data management.

A workkow history manager maintains the information essential for workkow monitoring and data mining as well as for recovery and authorization purposes. Certain characteristics of workkow systems like the necessity to run these systems on heterogeneous, autonomous and distributed environments and the nature of data, prevent history management in workkows to be handled by the classical data mana...

Workkows are the semantically appropriate units of activity in heterogeneous environments. Heterogeneous environments, which are extremely common in enterprises of even moderate complexity, involve a number of database systems, each with its own interfaces, applications, and users. It is typically not possible to violate the autonomy of these systems, even though it is essential to have them in...

Workkow management systems have attracted a great deal of attention due to their ability to integrate heterogeneous, distributed applications into coherent business processing environments. In spite of their limitations, existing products are enjoying considerable success since they are the rst practical implementation of functionality and concepts studied for many years.
